The Director of the Northwest Traffic Management Center Ramiro Martínez Rodríguez as Director of the Study, the Construction Inspector of the Bridge Expansion Works by the Ministry of Public Works Pablo Domínguez Gómez and the Construction Director by AUDASA José César Canal Fernández, received the Award for the “Best ITS Project in Infrastructure 2019” granted by ITS Spain in the Closing Ceremony of the XIX Spanish Congress of Intelligent Transport Systems.

The singularity of this project lies in the application of action protocols in case of incidence in tunnels to a singular bridge, protocols that until now have been applied exclusively in tunnels.

The “Rande Bridge Operations Manual“, drawn up by the ICEACSA team, includes the risk analyses that are mandatory in the case of the bridge, as well as the communication and action protocols in the event of an incident.

It is also a case of success and an example of coordination and cooperation between administrations, in this case, between the Directorate General of Traffic, Ministry of Development and AUDASA, Concessionaire of the AP-9 Ferrol-Portuguese Border Highway.

The Rande Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge opened to traffic in 1981 and forms part of the Pontevedra – Vigo section of the AP-9 Motorway, linking the municipalities of Redondela and Moaña, on the margins of the Rande Strait.

The Rande bridge is made up of the central bridge and two access viaducts with a total length of 1,558 m; the central bridge being a cable-stayed metal bridge that rests on two pillars located on the river bed and with a height of 128 metres above the water level and directly cemented without modifying the rocky bottom.

The central section has a span of 400.14 m and is located at a height of 48 meters above sea level, the sides have a span of 147.42 m.

At the time of its inauguration in 1981 it was the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world.

On December 30, 2017, the extension of the bridge was put into service with two lanes in each direction. These two lanes, in addition to the four initially constructed, were built outside the piles, requiring this geometry of segregated lanes to adopt singular and different measures in the event of incidents on any of the tracks.
