INFRAESTRUTURAS DE PORTUGAL HAS AWARDED THE ICEACSA- GEG- COWI CONSORTIUM THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PRELIMINARY STUDY, EXECUTION PROJECT AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STUDY OF THE INTERVENTIONS TO IMPROVE THE RAILWAY CAPACITY ON THE LEIXÕES LINE AND IN THE NEW RAILWAY TERMINAL OF GRANDE PORTO.

The Port of Leixões is the second national port of Portugal in terms of cargo handling and is operating at the limit of its capacity in the container segment. There is the possibility of increasing its capacity in the nearest period, through the creation of new logistics centres in the vicinity of the port area, together with the improvement of railway accessibility.

In order to support this growth, the project to improve the railway capacity of the Port of Leixões, through the Leixões Line and the subsequent connection with the Aveiro – Vilar Formoso Corridor, through the North Line, arose. The interventions are aimed at renovating the existing railway infrastructure in the current terminal at the Port of Leixões, building a new intermodal railway terminal in Guifões and modifying the stations to allow the crossing of 750-metre trains, specifically at the Contumil and São Mamede de Infesta stations.

The combination of interventions, associated with the interventions at the Port of Leixões, which will be carried out on the Leixões Line are essential for the development of the multimodal logistics system in Portugal. These interventions are crucial to achieve national and European intermodality objectives and to create a more efficient and sustainable transport logistics system.

These studies and projects fall within the scope of the Northern International Corridor, as the Port of Leixões, together with the Port of Aveiro, form part of the corridor and, in turn, both form part of the 2014-2020 Strategic Transport and Infrastructure Plan (PETI3+).

The ICEACSA-GEG-COWI consortium has been pre-qualified according to the Qualification System: “Service Providers for the preparation of Studies and Projects or Review of Railway Installation Projects” since 2016, and it was within this framework that it competed in the Public Tender in December 2018, being awarded this Project.
